Imported Concentrated Potassium Chloride Requires Safeguards

Given the current shortage in Canada of vials of concentrated potassium chloride (KCl), a UK-authorized product has been approved for exceptional importation and sale. This product is now available in Canadian hospitals, but safeguards are needed to prevent fatal incidents, such as those that have occurred in the past with the inadvertent injection of concentrated KCl (i.e., substitution errors). This communication highlights the safety risks associated with concentrated KCl and recommended safeguards.
