Rising Rates: Antipsychotic Use in Canada’s LTC Homes

A new report by the Appropriate Use Coalition shares that one in four long-term care (LTC) residents in Canada are on antipsychotic medications potentially inappropriately. The report, Rising Rates: Antipsychotic Use in Canada’s LTC Homes, was prepared using the latest data from the Canadian Institute for Health Information. Rates have been on the rise since the onset of COVID-19, climbing to 24.5% in 2023-24.

ISMP Canada is one of twelve Canadian organizations in the Coalition that are working collectively to improve the appropriate prescribing and use of medications in Canada. ISMP Canada also participates on a sub-group of seven Coalition members that are focused on addressing the specific issue of the appropriate use of antipsychotics in LTC.
